Laylat al-Qadr - The Night of Power

WHAT

Laylat al-Qadr (also known as Shab-e-Qadr), the Night of Power, Night of Value, the Night of Decree or Night of Measures, is the anniversary of the night Muslims believe the first verses of the Qur'an were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). The night of qadr is the most virtuous night of the year.

Allah (swt) says in the Quran [97:1-5]:

Verily We have sent it down (the Quran) on the Night of Power. (1)
And what will make you know what the Night of Power is? (2)
The Night of Power is better than a thousand months. (3)
The angels and the Rooh descend therein by Allaah's Permission with all Decrees for every affair. (4)
It is all peace till the rising of the dawn, (5)

WHY

Simple - The Night of Power is better than a thousand months. (3)

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "Whoever establishes the prayers on the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah's rewards (not to show off) then all his past sins will be forgiven." Sahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 2, Number 35.

WHEN

Narated by 'Aisha (radhiAllahu 'anha): Allah's Apostle (salAllahu 'alayhi wasallam) said, "Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan." Sahih Bukhari Volume 003, Book 032, Hadith Number 234.

It is preferred to seek this night during the last ten nights of Ramadan, as the Prophet strove his best in seeking it during that time. The Prophet would stay up during the last ten nights, would wake his wives, and then would remain apart from them to worship. (Fiqh-us-Sunnah Volume 003, Zakaat and Fasting, Fiqh 3.145.)

Narated By Ibn Abbas : The Prophet said, "Look for the Night of Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramadan ,' on the night when nine or seven or five nights remain out of the last ten nights of Ramadan (i.e. 21, 23, 25, respectively). Sahih Bukhari Volume 003, Book 032, Hadith Number 238.

Narated By 'Ubada bin As-Samit : The Prophet came out to inform us about the Night of Qadr but two Muslims were quarreling with each other. So, the Prophet said, "I came out to inform you about the Night of Qadr but such-and-such persons were quarreling, so the news about it had been taken away; yet that might be for your own good, so search for it on the 29th, 27th and 25th (of Ramadan). Sahih Bukhari Volume 003, Book 032, Hadith Number 240.

A few identifiers:

  • .. the sign which the Messenger of Allah (saws) gave us, and that is that on that day (the sun) would rise without having any ray in it. Sahih Muslim Book 006, Hadith Number 2633.
  • .. The sun rises like a vessel of water in the morning following that night; it has no ray until it rises high up. Abu Dawud Book 002, Hadith Number 1373.
  • .. its indication is that the sun rises bright on that day without rays. Sahih Muslim Book 004, Hadith Number 1668.

ADDITIONAL POINTERS:

Narated By 'Aisha : When the last ten days of Ramadhan came, the Prophet (pbuh) kept vigil and prayed during the whole night, and tied the wrapper tightly, and awakened his family (to pray during the night). Abu Dawud Book 002, Hadith Number 1371.
Ibn Umar (ra) reported Allah's Messenger (saws) as saying: Seek it (Laylat-al-Qadr) in the last (ten nights). If one among you shows slackness and weakness (in the earlier part of Ramadan), it should not be allowed to prevail upon him in the last week. Sahih Muslim Book 006, Hadith Number 2621.

Aisha (ra) asked the Prophet (saws): “O Messenger of Allah, if I know what night is the night of Qadr, what should I say during it?” He said: ‘Say: Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun, tuhib al-’afwa fa’fu ‘anny  O Allah, You the One who pardons, and You love to pardon, so pardon me.’ (Ahmad, Ibn Majah, and Tirmidhi (3513)) - Fiqh-us-Sunnah Volume 003, Zakaat and Fasting, Fiqh 3.145B

For the Talib-Ul-Ilm

Night of Qadr, which night is it?. (Fiqh-us-Sunnah Volume 003, Zakaat and Fasting, Fiqh 3.145A)

Scholars hold different opinions as to the night which is the night of qadr. Some are of the opinion that it is the 21st, some say the 23rd, others say the 25th and still others say it is the 29th. Some say
that it varies from year to year but it is always among the last ten nights of Ramadan. Most scholars, though, vouch for the 27th.

Ahmad recorded, with a sahih chain, from Ibn 'Umar that the Prophet said: "He who likes to seek that night should do so on the 27th. Ubayy ibn K'ab said: By Allah, and there is no God but Him, it is during Ramadan--and He swore to that--and by Allah, I know what night it is. It is the night during which the Prophet ordered us to make prayers, the night of the 27th. Its sign is that the sun rises in the morning white and without any rays." This is related by Muslim, Abu Dawud, Ahmad, and by at-Tirmizhi who called it sahih.
Narated By Zirr b. Hubaish : I said to Ubayy b. K'ab: Tell me about lailat al-qadr, O Abu al-Mundhir, for our companion (Ibn Mas'ud) was questioned about it, and he said: Anyone who gets up for prayer every night all the year round will hit upon it (i.e. lailat al-qadr). He replied: May Allah have mercy on Abu 'Abd al-Rahman. By Allah he knew that it was in Ramadhan, (Musaddad's version goes) but he disliked that the people should content themselves (with that night alone); or the people should not content themselves (with that night alone). According to the agreed version: By Allah, it is the twenty-seventh night of Ramadhan, without any reservation. I said: How do you know that, Abu al-Mundhir? He replied: By the indication (or sign) of which the Apostle of Allah (pbuh) informed us. I asked Zirr: What is that sign? He replied: The sun rises like a vessel of water in the morning following that night; it has no ray until it rises high up. (Abu Dawud Book 002, Hadith Number 1373)
