Imam Ahmad recorded Abu Umamah's saying:
Once, while the Prophet (peace be upon him) was sitting in his blessed gathering, surrounded by his immaculate companions, there came a young man into the masjid and began to look right and left as if he was looking for someone. His eyes fell on the Prophet (peace be upon him) and so he walked towards him.
The young man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allah! Give me permission to commit Zina (unlawful sex)”. The people surrounded him and rebuked him, saying “Stop! Stop!” but the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Come closer”. As the young man came closer, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said “Sit down” and so he did.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Would you like it (unlawful sex) for your mother”. The Young man said, “No, by Allah, may I be ransomed for you”. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Neither do the people like it for their mothers”
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Would you like it for your daughter”. The Young man said, “No, by Allah, may I be ransomed for you”. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Neither do the people like it for their daughters”
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Would you like it for your sister”. The Young man said, “No, by Allah, may I be ransomed for you”. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Neither do the people like it for their sisters”
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Would you like it for your paternal aunt”. The Young man said, “No, by Allah, may I be ransomed for you”. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Neither do the people like it for their paternal aunts”
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Would you like it for your maternal aunt”. The Young man said, “No, by Allah, may I be ransomed for you”. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Neither do the people like it for their maternal aunts”
The young man having realized he was wrong said with all humility, “O messenger of Allah! Pray to Allah to cleanse my heart!”
The Prophet (peace be upon him) put his hand on the young man’s chest and said,
اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ ذَنْبَهُ، وَطَهِّرْ قَلْبَهُ، وَأَحْصِنْ فَرْجَه
“O Allah, forgive his sin, purify his heart and guard his chastity”
The young man left saying, “By Allah, I went to the messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) while fornication was the most beloved act to me. But as I left his company, fornication was the most hateful action to me.”
